Dogo Argentino History

Dogo argentino puppies for saleDogo argentino puppies for sale

The Dogo Argentino is the realization of a dream had by Antonio Nores Martinez over 80 years ago . He was not yet 18 years old in 1925 when he and his brother Augustin Dogo Argentino puppies for salebegan the long and difficult process of creating a big game hound designed specifically for the diverse and rugged Argentine countryside. Antonios goal was "A mix that would turn them into sociable dogs, capable of living in freedom, in families and on estates, keeping the great courage of the primitive breed, but applied to a useful and noble end; sport hunting and vermin control."

They started with the now extinct 'fighting dog of cordoba'. A great majority of their early work was devoted to eliminating the fighting eagerness while developing the hunting instinct. This was essential as Antonios aim was 'more than anything else to deprive them of that fighting eagerness against other dogs, which made them useless for pack hunting'.

The formula they started is as follows:

1) the Fighting Dog of Cordoba, to which he added blood from

2) the Pointer to give him a keen sense of smell which would be essential for the hunt.

3) The Boxer added vivacity and gentleness;

4) the Great Dane it's size;

5) the Bull Terrier, fearlessness;

6) the Bulldog gave it an ample chest and boldness;

7) the Irish Wolfhound brought it's instinct as a hunter of wild game;

8) the Dogue de Bordeaux contributed it's powerful jaws;

9) the Great Pyrenees it's white coat and

10) the Spanish Mastiff gave it's quota of power.

The brothers started with ten Cordoban bitches. They then began bringing in the contributing studs until the offspring showed promise in the desired direction. At one point they had 30 cordoban bitches in their care. These school age boys could not have done this on their own. Much help was given them by their family and their father who hired a kennel man to care for the dogs while the boys were in school and whose friends provided donations to aid in the boys' endeavor.

Antonio later became a respected surgeon and used his medical knowledge to refine his dream. He wrote the standard for the new breed in 1928. Sadly, though, Antonio did not live to see the realization of his dream. In 1956 he was killed during a boar hunt by a man who intended to rob him. At this point Augustin took over Antonios dream. He brought the Dogo back from near devastation and moved the headquarters for the breed from Cordoba to Esquel, located in Patagonia in southern Argentina. Augustin later became the Argentine ambassador to Canada. He took advantage of his travels to spread Dogos throughout the world. By this time the Dogo Argentino was becoming a favorite among big game hunters in Argentina and surrounding countries in hunting wild boar and puma. The Dogo Argentino was quickly becoming a legend.
